This 5th grader went to school Wednesday and was placed in another class due to her hair being a distraction in the class. She is currently back in her original class, she mentions she was inspired by Willow Smith(Whip my hair). I don't know if this young lady went to a school that was predominantly black or white but one thing I do know for sure is that this was discrimination on all levels. A student should have not been placed in a different class because of her hair it just isn't right it shows how bias our society can be to something they are unfamiliar with. I also feel there is something to be learned from this story and that is if we actually warm up to something new we will realize that our perceptions of people totally devalues who they are inside. I'm pretty sure this young ladies hair didn't have anything to do with her academic growth in the class, there are just bias that we have to get through as a society or better yet a nation.
Great story. I think it's important to let children be children and express them selves, as long as they're not hurting anyone. I swear I can't stand close minded people, this world is too big for that.
